There’s a lot of talk about spending “quality time” with children, as though the only moments that count are the “special” times- going to the zoo, playing a board game, or reading a book. Those are very high quality times. But I want to share a conversation I had with a 5 year old. It was Friday and we were waiting for his mom to pick him up from childcare. He asked me what I was going to do for the weekend and I told him I had nothing special planned, I might even stay in my pj’s all day. He then told me I was lucky. That surprised me until he explained “I haveto do quality time with my mom and dad. I wish sometimes I could just be me in my jams”. His parents were great, loving and obviously involved, but this story tells you that it doesn’t have to be so much work; you don’t have to try so hard. Just being around you, knowing you are there and available is quality time too. Besides that, a gift you can give your children is the ability to be comfortable in their own skin, the ability to entertain themselves and to enjoy time alone. It’s quality time when you take a second to pat your daughter’s head when she’s pretending to be a puppy. You don’t have to jump in as the dogcatcher unless you really want to do that. It’s usually enough to acknowledge and move on. So go ahead, dust, vacuum, rake the leaves, read your own book, work on your own hobby. As long as you are available your child is enjoying quality time with you. And you will be modeling great life skills from house and yard work to having a hobby.
Relax and just be.
